More than 30 infant deaths connected to Rock n’Plays show a need for strict oversight

U.S. PIRG Education Fund

Fisher-Price recalled 4.7 million Rock n’Play baby sleepers on Friday. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said that Fisher-Price was recalling all models of the sleepers because more than 30 infants have died in Rock n’Plays in the decade since they were introduced. The CPSC said some babies died when they rolled over while unrestrained in the sleeper.

Adam Garber, U.S. PIRG Education Fund Consumer Watchdog, issued the following statement:

“While we’re pleased that Fisher-Price is finally recalling these dangerous sleepers, 30 deaths in 10 years is 30 deaths too many and 10 years too late. For years, the American Academy of Pediatrics has said a safe sleep surface is hard and flat. This product clearly fails that test despite being marketed as safe for sleep to parents across the country. Parents expect more rigorous testing when it comes to protecting infants.

“Considering how many Rock n’Plays are out there, and how long they’ve been out there, it will be difficult to make sure that everyone who has one of these sleepers gets proper warning. We’re calling on the CPSC and Fisher-Price to use every tool at their disposal to protect American children.

“We all owe Consumer Reports a debt of gratitude for notifying the public about this danger, and we also thank the American Association of Pediatrics for insisting on this recall.”
